You
need a bit extra effort and preparation when it comes to paint your living room
walls in dark colors than painting your walls in light colors. If you are
selecting the color for wall painting,
consider having the measurement of your room and the amount of sunlight it
receives all day long. Rooms may have “black holes” with dark colors if they
are starved for bright sunlight.
How to Do?
1. Pull
out picture hangers, nails and spackle holes and let it dry to prepare the
walls for paint. Sand the spackles wisely to get it smooth. Mainly in case of
textured walls, spackle holes of nails in small spots. You can buy sprayed
applicators and texture products.
2.
Remove
all the trims and moldings from walls, if any. If you can’t, apply masking tape
that are bleed-resistant to ceiling trim.
3.
Use primer to prime the walls which are
tinted deeply with dark color. Especially when you have to paint over light or
white walls, it is important. For tinted primer, make sure to shave the third
paint coat.
4.
Have
a bucket of 5 gallon and stir in the paint if you want to paint above 1 gallon
of paint to avoid reflection from sunlight.
5.
Along the perimeter, cut in with sash brush
at the walls, around the walls and at corners. Just after cutting in any
particular wall, paint other walls. In the wet edge, don’t let the stripes to be
created by painting wet edge of paint.
6.
With roller applicator, paint the wall in
“W” pattern with appropriate nap of semi-smooth, smooth or rough roller cover. To
go faster with your paint job, screw roller on the roller extension and eliminate
the change of climbing or bending the ladder to paint.
7.
From side by side, cross around the W
pattern for several times until you cover the wall evenly by using the paint. Make
sure to have paint on roller that is enough to avoid the “cracking” or
“sizzling” sound while applying the roller. If this sound occurs, then your
roller may not have sufficient paint.
8.
Paint first coat on every part of the wall
and let it dry for around 6 hours. Use lids to cover cans or buckets filled
with paint. Put in the brushes and roller head in the tray to have them
engrossed in paint. Close the string and slip garbage plastic bag over the
roller tray. This way, you can keep your brush, roller and paint wet for longer
period.
9.
Over the first coat, have the second one in
identical way. Let it dry throughout the night. Store roller and brushes in
plastic bag.
10. If
you have dark red color to paint, have a third coat if it not appears bold as
you want it to be. Especially dark red, some dark colors need around 3 coats,
either with or without primer. Let them dry throughout the night. Store the
roller and brushes in plastic bag again.
